Asbestos Removal
The sale and use of asbestos containing products in the UK was finally prohibited in November 1999. However, due to the widespread use of materials containing asbestos since the early 1900’s, it can be safely assumed that the majority of buildings built before 1985 probably have some amount of asbestos in them. In fact you can only be sure that there is NO asbestos content if the building in question was built AFTER the year 2000. Asbestos is a substance that occurs naturally, so some asbestos fibres are naturally released into the atmosphere. This means, that everybody is exposed at all times to some amount of asbestos fibres. At these very low natural levels they do not cause a danger, however they do become dangerous when there is an increase in the level of free fibres, for example during the movement and destruction of asbestos containing materials, something which can commonly occur in the construction industry. As a result, the legislations involving the removal and disposal of asbestos are now extremely stringent. Asbestos waste is categorised as special waste and is therefore subject to strict consignment note requirements for generation and transport. Before removal from site, the waste should be double bagged and labelled to show the origin of the waste before being consigned for final disposal to a licensed asbestos site. Currently, the number of sites allowed to dispose of asbestos are few and far between, which unfortunately has resulted in high costs.
Also, any sites where more than 250kg of hazardous waste (which includes asbestos) is produced MUST be registered with the Environmental Agency before the waste is removed. Select A Skip UK Ltd are fully licenced to organise the safe disposal of all asbestos types. We can also arrange to register your site on your behalf if required.
