Pretreatment

As of the 30th October 2007, non-hazardous waste MUST be treated before it can be landfilled.

This Pre-treatment requirement stems from the Landfill directive, which aims to reduce our reliance on landfill as a waste management option, and minimise the environmental impact on landfill sites themselves

What does this mean?

To comply with pre-treatment regulations a treatment option must comply with one or more of the following:

1.    it must be a physical, thermal, chemical or biological process including sorting

2.    it must change the characteristics of the waste; and

3.    it must do so in order to reduce its volume; reduce its hazardous nature; or facilitate its handling; or enhance its recovery

There are some, very limited exceptions to the need for treatment because there are sometimes no treatments available that would contribute towards the aim of the directive.  The exceptions are:

a.    it is inert waste for which treatment IS NOT technically feasible;

b.    it is waste other than inert waste and treatment would not reduce its quantity, or the hazards that it poses to human health or the environment

The waste producer (yourselves) must either; treat their own waste and provide information and treatment for future holders or, ensure that the waste will be treated by a subsequent holder before it is landfilled.

Waste producers are not obliged to treat their own waste as you can employ this service from a waste contractor.  Individual producers will need to decide the option that best suits the waste and the circumstances.  In most cases, the producer will opt to have the waste treated elsewhere for practical reasons such as lack of space for sorting on site.

let select help you comply…

All the waste that we arrange to be collected from your sites will be taken to a licensed waste transfer station or materials recycling facility, which will ensure you will comply with the new legislation.
